How many people know how to listen to their bodies?
Most people count on their medical doctor to do this for them. This is not how it used to be. We have made someone else accountable for ourselves who doesn’t live in our body. God gave us intuition to sense communications that the body gives us to say “Something is wrong, please handle this.” Most communications can be handled by you if you take a step back and think what am I doing to cause this? (diet, toxin exposure, rest, stress, etc.)
How many of you realize that God equipped our bodies to heal itself when given the right items to heal itself?
We all have a built-in system that involuntarily regulates many things in our body (chiropractic calls it Innate Intelligence.) For example, do you have to think about your heart pumping, heart rate, blood pressure, insulin levels, breathing, wound healing, body temperature, etc.?
This built in system is called your “Autonomic Nervous System.” It regulates so many things in addition to the ones I have already mentioned. I like to think of our autonomic nervous system as our body’s intuition to know what to do to keep us living a healthy, dis-eased free life. You noticed I spelled dis-eased rather than disease because there is a distinct difference between them. Dis-ease is what happens first to the body, the body is no longer at ease. If you don’t listen to the communication(s) from your body, your body will move from dis-ease to disease and this is when you start down the spiral of seeing your medical doctor and then a number of medical specialists which prescribe medications and possibly surgery.
The autonomic nervous system has a language of its own that is used by many alternative healthcare practitioners and has been for centuries. This language is called muscle testing. At my practice, I use Nutrition Response Testing® to allow your autonomic nervous system to communicate where the dis-ease is occurring. This dis-ease (or loss of proper function) can occur in your organs and/or areas of your body (joints, painful areas, lymph, skin rashes, etc.) As a Nutrition Response Testing® practitioner I work with 4 types of patients: 1) patients with dis-ease, 2) patients with disease, 3) patients with dis-ease and disease, and 4) patients with no dis-ease. Nutrition Response Testing® works well with various dis-ease situations and various diseases.
Since Nutrition Response Testing® practitioners use whole food supplements and teach their patients to eat real food rather than process foods (which includes food from fast food restaurants), Nutrition Response Testing® practitioners can work with people who may be under medical care for their disease(s). This can disturb some medical doctors because their health toolbox contains drugs and surgery as their tools.
Learning How to Be Muscle Tested
The kind of muscle testing alternative practitioners use is a test of the autonomic nervous system to see if the tested muscle strengthens when it should and relaxes when it should. Whereas, non-alternative practitioners will use muscle testing to see how strong muscles are by you using all the strength you can muster up.
Once you learn how to be properly muscle tested, you will not mentally/consciously feel the need to use every muscle fiber in your arm and neck muscles to be tested. Most people learn in a minute or less. Occasionally there are others who need several minutes to learn how to be properly muscle tested. These are the ones who insist on using every muscle fiber in their arm and neck muscles plus want to bend their elbow to get even more strength. They are insisting on making it a strength test.
For this person, I explain that your autonomic nervous system is just like the electrical wires in your home. Our brain and spinal cord are electrical as well but unfortunately most people don’t realize this unless they have taken science courses, physics and anatomy. (The “Bundle Branch “of the Heart is the pathway that electrical impulses travel to make your heart beat.) When you turn a light switch on, energy is being carried from the source of energy to the light switch allowing the light to go on. Your autonomic nervous system does the same thing. It allows energy to flow from your autonomic nervous system to your muscle to strengthen when it should and will not allow the energy to flow to your muscle when it should relax.
Since our bodies are electrical, our bodies have polarity or are polar. Polarity means there is north-south tension between those opposite poles. It means there is flow of energy as energy usually flows between the north and south poles—just like in a battery where there is a + pole and a – pole. (Energy has to do with the flow of electrons, the body works the same way-that is how your muscles get moved through an action potential.) This body polarity is used to teach a person how to be muscle tested.
To do that the Nutrition Response Testing® practitioner will ask you to please MATCH their pressure as they push on your arm. If the practitioner were to remove their hand quickly and your arm flairs into the air, then your autonomic nervous system is not being tested. Instead, you are testing the strength of the muscle. When done correctly, your arm will lock into place, meaning the arm stays in place. (Sometimes the arm may drop a bit before staying in place.)
Next the practitioner will touch the bridge of your nose with each side of their finger while muscle testing. One side of the finger when muscle tested will cause your arm to lock into place and the other side of the finger when muscled tested will not stay locked.
Once you understand this and feel the difference, you are ready to experience what Nutrition Response Testing® is all about.
(Occasionally, a person truly does not test properly. This tells the practitioner the person is not testable. In this case, the practitioner needs to find out what is preventing the person from being testable.)
Checking the Nervous System First (Pre-Flight Check)
Before the organs and areas of the body are checked, the Autonomic Nervous System has 2 parts that need to be checked. Your ANS consists of the 1) Sympathetic Nervous System and 2) the Para-Sympathetic Nervous System. The Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) is our fight or flight mechanism and should be more active when we are up and about. The Para-Sympathetic Nervous System (PSNS) calms us down and should be more active when we are sleeping and eating. Your ANS is responsible for properly regulating how much of the SNS and PSNS is needed depending on the body’s needs.
Think of both the SNS and PSNS having a gas pedal and a brake pedal. The ANS is the foot that will push the appropriate pedals. For example, you are out walking and you see a coyote who spots you. Your brain tells your ANS there’s a life threatening problem. Your ANS puts the brake on the PSNS and diverts all the blood from your digestive and sex organs, allowing this blood to go to your leg muscles. The ANS simultaneously presses down the SNS gas pedal and gets you moving faster than you thought you could move.
The SNS is always checked first by the practitioner by putting their fingers together and arching the fingers backwards to make the palm taunt. The palm is then placed over the belly button causing a stress to the SNS like the coyote. If the SNS is functioning properly, the patient’s arm will unlock indicating the SNS knows the palm is not a threat. If the arm stays locked, the SNS is not functioning properly and the practitioner must find out what is “blocking” the SNS from functioning correctly. Nutrition Response Testing® has what are called the “5 Common Stressors” which are:
- Food Sensitivities
- Immune Challenges (bacteria, viruses, fungi/yeasts, parasites, and virulence factors)
These “5 Common Stressors” are always checked whenever there is a problem with the autonomic nervous system, organs, and areas of the body. The first 4 are contained in black vinyl cases (which look like a VHS tape case). Each case holds 2 stressors, one case contains the Food Sensitivities and Immune Challenges. The other case contains the Metals and Chemicals. The cases have specific vials in them pertaining to the specific stressor type. Problem scars that are a stressor are determined in a different manner.
Everything on earth has an electromagnetic field, including foods, bacteria, viruses, fungi/yeasts/molds, parasites, metals, chemicals, in fact anything you can think of. We work with vials that are imprinted with the electromagnetic field. When vials are placed on you, your body will “read” or register exactly what that item is, and your body will also know whether the vials are a problem or not.
The practitioner will place the Food Sensitivities side face down on the patient’s body and muscle test again with their palm over the belly button to see if the arm unlocks. If it unlocks, there is a food vial(s) that is blocking the SNS. The practitioner will then find out which food item(s) are a problem by having you touch several vials at a time. Any time the arm unlocks, there is at least one vial that is blocking the SNS. You will then be instructed to use 1 finger and touch one vial at a time to find all the vials that are causing the SNS to be blocked. If the arm stays locked, there is not a food sensitivity blocking the SNS. (IMPORTANT-A person can have a known food sensitivity but not have it show up. This just means their known food sensitivity is not causing the SNS to be blocked.)
The practitioner will repeat this process with the Immune Challenges, Metals, and Chemicals. (IMPORTANT-Various item(s) will be revealed for example like oats, tobacco, aluminum, mercury, etc. Patients almost always say I have not eaten oats in 20 years since I never feel well when I do or I quit smoking 10 years ago or I don’t eat anything that comes in an aluminum can anymore or I had all my fillings replaced. For whatever reason, people don’t realize: what the body can’t excrete at the time you were putting these things into your body or had fillings in your body, gets stored in cells though out the body. They eventually can cause problems.)
Based on the findings of the first 4 of the “5 Common Stressors,” the practitioner will then know what supplements to muscle test on your body while their palm is over your belly button. There are always several supplements to try for each of these 4 Common Stressors so the exact right supplement for your biochemistry is found. The right one will be found when your arm unlocks communicating your SNS is no longer blocked.
The 5th Common Stressor, Problem scar(s), are determined by putting the supplement for healing a scar’s nerve fibers on the body along with the practitioner’s palm over the belly button. If the arm unlocks, then the practitioner removes the supplement and asks the patient to touch each scar individually. At the same time the practitioner will put their palm over the belly button and muscle test. Each scar that causes the arm to unlock is a problem scar causing the SNS to be blocked.
The most problematic scars are the ones that fall on the midline of the body because they affect the most important meridians. The Sympathetic nerve fibers in these problematic scars whether surgery or injury never healed properly. The scars build up energy in them and will sporadically release energy into the meridian and disrupt the energy flow, leading to dis-ease. (Acupuncturists work to get the energy flowing properly with the use of acupuncture needles.)
At this point you will have supplement(s) laying on your body that unblocked you (if you were blocked). If they are not on your body, your Autonomic Nervous System will not communicate properly going forward.
Lastly when someone is blocked, it is also referred to as a Barrier in the Nervous System. Indicators of being blocked is 1) nothing the patient tries to heal themselves works or 2) some symptoms never improve. There are 144 ways that a person can be blocked (48 ways lying down + 48 seated + 48 standing) and these are called “Deeper Levels of Blocking.”
A LOCKED ARM OVER THE BELLY BUTTON INDICATES DIS-EASE / DYSFUNCTION
FROM THIS POINT FORWARD AN UNLOCKED ARM INDICATES DIS- EASE / DYSFUNCTION
The SNS is then checked in a second and third way (on the right then the left hand). The tips of your thumb and pinky will be put together on your right hand while making circle. The practitioner will then muscle test to see how your body responds. If you arm remains locked, the SNS is functioning properly but if the arm unlocks then the SNS is not functioning properly and this is called switched. Switching causes the information going between the brain and nervous system to be diverted from its intended direction or target organ. Using the case of the coyote, instead of your legs moving to run, you freeze in place unable to move but wet your pants.
Switching is addressed by using the “5 Common Stressors” again. Instead of looking for a stressor that unlocks the arm in blocking, we are looking for the arm to lock with switching.
For example, let’s say the metals mercury and titanium are causing the switching. The practitioner will ask you keep your tips of your right thumb and pinky together while they muscle test the “5 Common Stressors.”
1) They will put the food sensitivities test kit side face down on your body first and muscle test. Since these are not a problem, the arm remains unlocked (indicating food sensitivities are not causing the switching.)
2) Next the immune challenges test kit side will be put face down on your body and muscle tested. Since these are not a problem, the arm remains unlocked (indicating immune challenges are not causing the switching.)
3) Next the metals test kit side will be put face down on your body and muscle tested. Since these are a problem, the arm locks (indicating metals are causing the switching.) The practitioner will then find out which metals are a problem by having you touch several vials at a time. Any time the arm locks, there is at least one vial that is switching the SNS. You will then be instructed to use 1 finger and touch one vial at a time to find all the vials that are causing the SNS to be switched. In this case the arm would lock when the finger touches the mercury vial and when it touches the titanium vial.
4) The practitioner would continue checking the chemicals test kit and scars but I will stop here since my example stated mercury and titanium as causing the switching.
5) Based on the findings of mercury and titanium the practitioner will then know what supplements to muscle test on the body while you keep your tips of your right thumb and pinky together in a cirlce. As mentioned earlier, there are always several supplements to try so the exact right supplement for your biochemistry is found. The right one will be found when your arm locks communicating your SNS is no longer switched.
6) The practitioner would then repeat on the left side by putting the tips of your thumb and pinky together on your left hand while making circle. Then they would muscle test and handle if you are switched.
At this point you will have supplement(s) laying on your body that unblocked you and/or unswitched you (if you were blocked and/or switched). If they are not on your body, your Autonomic Nervous System will not communicate properly going forward.
Lastly when someone is switched, it is also referred to as Confusion in the Nervous System. Indicators of being switched is 1) person roller coasters, meaning they get better then they get worse or 2) test well for a supplement at one visit and then report problems with it within days of taking it and no longer test well for it at the next visit. There are 108 ways that a person can be switched (36 ways lying down + 36 seated + 36 standing) and these are called “Deeper Levels of Switching.”
Checking the Organs and Areas of the Body-aka Body Scan (Take Off)
Our bodies are like an onion. This means that the body has a pecking order in which it wants the layers peeled off. Otherwise, you are just chasing symptoms. This can be difficult for some patients to understand or accept because they just want certain symptoms gone first. I get this, I was one of these patients. Also, there can be several layers to a symptom before the symptom leaves the body. If a patient is blocked and/or switched, these are layers. In a number of cases until the block and/or switch is handled, the body will not reveal any new layers.
REMEMBER – AN UNLOCKED ARM INDICATES DIS- EASE / DYSFUNCTION IN AN ORGAN OR AREA OF THE BODY
THE BODY SCAN
The practitioner will most likely have you lying down on a massage table or chiropractic table for this. They start with the head and work their way down the body. Dr. Knox typically likes to say each organ that she is applying pressure to as she scans your body.
It is through the dermatomes of the organs and areas of the body that the Autonomic Nervous System communicates. (FYI-Dermatomes are what get affected with Shingles.) The dermatomes are made up of 80% Sympathetic Nervous System fibers. These fibers are connected to your spinal cord thus causing communication to occur with your arm muscle. By Dr. Knox applying pressure she is causing ischemia to that organ or body area. (Ischemia is an inadequate blood supply to an organ or part of the body.) If the organ or body area being tested is already in a dysfunctional state, the added ischemia created in the dermatome will cause the Autonomic Nervous System to result in an unlocked arm. An unlocked arm indicates the organ or body area is in a state of dis-ease and/or disease.
If the arm remains locked, then this indicates the organ or body area is either functioning well (meaning there is no dis-ease) or it is a layer but you’re Autonomic Nervous Systems has other layers it needs handled first.
Please realize because the hand pressure causes the ischemia, the patient’s hand or the practitioner’s hand can be used. When checking the private areas of the body the patient will be asked to apply the pressure (for example, breasts, female and male sexual organs).
There are 28 organs that are normally checked and additional 27 organs and body areas that can be checked depending on a patient’s individual case as well as painful areas of the body (back pain, joint pain such hips, knees, shoulders, wrists, knuckles, etc.)
Once all of the organs and body areas are identified causing an unlocked arm, the practitioner needs to find out which is your first layer. (Unless you were blocked or switched in which case they are finding your next layer.) Nutrition Response Testing® has what is called “Priority Hand Mode.” The patient is showed how to put the finger nail of the middle finger into the crease of the thumb closest to the thumb tip. It can be done on either hand. This works majority of the time but there are 2 other hand modes if it doesn’t reveal the layer the Autonomic Nervous System wants handled. With the patient in this Priority Hand Mode, the practitioner will apply pressure again but only to the organs or body areas that caused an unlocked arm. The organ or body area that still creates an unlocked arm is your priority or onion layer wanting to be handled.
You will be asked to stop the Priority Hand Mode so the practitioner can start using the “5 Common Stressors” to see if any of them locks the arm while they are applying pressure to the organ or body area.
For example, let’s say the c-section scar locks the arm. The practitioner will lay the supplement for healing a scar’s nerve fibers on the body while applying pressure to organ or body area and muscle testing. If the arm locks, the practitioner knows there is a scar that is affecting that organ or body area. The practitioner will remove that supplement and continue applying pressure to the organ or body area while having you apply pressure to each scar on your body. The scar(s) that cause a lock arm are a problem. In this example it would be the c-section that would create a locked arm.
Scars can be from surgery and injuries, body piercings including earrings, tattoos, tooth extractions (think wisdom teeth), circumcision, vasectomy, episiotomy/c-section, vaccinations, epidurals, stretch marks, and chicken pox.
- The first scar everyone gets is their belly button.
- The only internal scar that can be a problem is from tonsil surgery because they are at the cusp of where the throat starts.
- A problematic scar can be close or distant to the organ or body area.
- Scars can sometimes suddenly activate even years after they were formed.
There are 2 parts to the handling of scars. 1) Massaging wheat germ oil or sesame seed oil on the scar 1-2x per day for 90 days. 2) Lasering the scar(s) for 4 minutes at each office visit.
The practitioner will have checked the other 4 Common Stressors and for this example they are not a problem. Next the practitioner will check to see if the organ or body area wants specific organ or body area nutrition in supplement form. If it does which is almost always the case, the right nutrition while on the body with pressure applied to the organ or body area will create a locked arm.
The very last thing to check with the organ or body area is to verify the organ or body area is completely satisfied. This is done by pulsing. Pulsing is seeing how many times your arm will lock in a row before unlocking. Most organs or body areas should have an arm that locks 10 times in a row before unlocking, except the heart should lock 12 times and the cerebellum (the back lower part of your skull) 15 times. If the arm locks at the appropriate number, this means the practitioner has located the right supplement(s) for that organ or body area. This tells the practitioner and the patient the organ or body area now has the right nutrients to put the fire out in that organ or body area. At future appointments, the organ or body area may need additional supplement(s) once the fire is out so the organ or body area can start repairing and healing itself. The repairing and healing occurs over a lengthy period of time (several months for the non-cellular level and several years at the cellular level).
At this point you will have supplements laying on your body that unblocked and/or unswitched you (if you were blocked and/or switched) plus the supplement to handle the c-section scar and the specific nutrition supplement(s) for the organ or body area.
The practitioner then goes back and retests each prior organ or body area that created an unlocked arm when pressure was applied to it excluding the organ or body area just handled. You will see some will not create an unlocked arm, but a locked arm. The organs or body areas that continue to create an unlocked arm, will require you to put your hand in Priority Hand Mode again. Based on what the priority organ or body area is, the practitioner will handle by using the “5 Common Stressors” again and check the organ or body area for specific nutrition supplement(s). The practitioner will repeat this until the remaining organs or body areas create a locking arm which will only take a few times.
What happens if you are not digesting your food well? You cannot digest the whole food supplements well that you just tested for either. Nutrition Response Testing® checks for this and handles this if it’s a problem.
Our bodies have 2 digestion points. They are located 1 inch from the bottom of your sternum on each side of your rib cage. The practitioner will touch them starting with the right side and check to see if you arm locks. If it locks, then they will see if it pulses to a 10. If it pulses to a 10, then that digestive point is doing well. If it pulses less than 10 or does not lock at all, the digestive point is not doing well. In this case the practitioner needs to see what supplement makes the arm pulse to a 10. Once the right digestive point is handled, then the left digestive point is check and handled if not pulsing to a 10 or the arm does not lock at all. The right digestive point indicates an enzyme deficiency whereas the left indicates a Hydrochloric Acid deficiency.
Checking the Nervous System Last (Post-Flight Check)
We need to make sure the gas and brakes pedals to your Autonomic Nervous system are still regulating properly. Occasionally there can be a supplement(s) that is upsetting to the Sympathetic Nervous system or the Para-Sympathetic Nervous system.
If there is an upset with the Para-Sympathetic Nervous system, it will be determined by the practitioner placing their finger behind your left earlobe. If the arm locks and pulses to a 10, your Para-Sympathetic is happy with the choice of supplements. If the arm does not lock or pulses at a number other than 10, there is a supplement(s) the Para-Sympathetic Nervous system does not like. The practitioner will remove one supplement at a time until getting a pulse of 10. Additionally, the practitioner will need to find a replacement for that supplement(s).
If there is an upset with the Sympathetic Nervous system, it will be determined by the practitioner rechecking to see if you are now blocked (meaning your arm does not unlock with their palm over your belly button, unless you have a deeper block. In this case the deeper block and the belly button will be checked to see if the arm does not unlock.) If the arm does not unlock, the practitioner will remove one supplement at a time until the arm unlocks. The practitioner will also need to find a replacement for that supplement(s).
This is done by having the patient cup their non-muscle testing arm which is usually the left hand for Dr. Knox. The practitioner will put 1 pill at a time in your hand and muscle test. If the arm locks, another pill will be put in the hand and muscle tested. An additional pill will be placed in your hand until your arm unlocks which indicates this is one too many pills. For example, the 10th pill is placed in your hand and your arm unlocks, your body’s exact dose is 9. (Many patients will notice their arm will not lock right away and when the next pill is placed in their hand, their arm quickly unlocks.) The dosing occurs in the palms because our palms contain a concentrated amount of Sympathetic Nervous system fibers for our protection. This is why you will quickly pull you hand away from a hot pan or something sharp.
